Classic plus day hikes in Tusheti: A 5-Days adventure

This tour is designed for travelers with enough time to fully enjoy Tusheti’s nature, spending three days on scenic day hikes to better explore its wild landscapes and remote rural places.

  • Trip Difficulty: Easy, but includes two long off-road drives on narrow, steep mountain roads and three day hikes. Good fitness level is required.

  • Accommodation: Shared twin/double/Single rooms in a traditional local guesthouses

Itinerary Overview:

Day 1: Tbilisi – Gombori Pass – Lechuri – Abano Pass – Omalo

We will depart Tbilisi early in the morning. Our drive will take us over Gombori Pass to the foothills of the Great Caucasus. Once we reach the village of Lechuri, we will turn off the asphalt road and follow an unpaved mountain route towards Abano Pass – the highest driveable mountain pass in the Caucasus (2,826 m.a.s.l.). Prepare for an EXTREMELY scenic yet DIFFICULT ride. It will take us min. 3 hours to climb to the top of the pass and another 2 or 3 hours to reach our guesthouse. Upon arrival in Tusheti, we will head to our guesthouse in Omalo before exploring the area. We will stroll around the village and visit Keselo Fortress for the spectacular views of Tusheti.

Day 2: Hiking from Omalo to Shenako through Ageurta

This beautiful trail connects the historic village of Omalo with the picturesque Shenako, passing through the peaceful Ageurta area. The route offers gentle ascents, scenic ridgelines, and wide-open views of Tusheti’s mountains. Ending in Shenako, hikers are welcomed by traditional stone houses, ancient churches, and the charm of one of Tusheti’s most iconic villages. A perfect hike for those who want both nature and culture in a single day.

Day 3: Hiking from Shenako to Dartlo

This adventurous trail leads from the traditional village of Shenako to the iconic Dartlo, one of Tusheti’s most famous villages. The hike takes you through diverse landscapes, climbing to high ridges with panoramic mountain views before descending into the Alazani valley. Along the way, you’ll experience untouched nature, dramatic scenery, and the unique spirit of Tusheti. Reaching Dartlo, you’ll be rewarded with its ancient stone towers, terraced houses, and unforgettable atmosphere.

Day 4: Hiking from Dartlo to Omalo

This long but rewarding hike takes you from the historic stone village of Dartlo back to Omalo, the heart of Tusheti. The trail climbs steadily through high mountain ridges, offering sweeping views over deep valleys and remote villages. With its mix of challenging ascents and breathtaking scenery, this route perfectly showcases the wild beauty of Tusheti. Arriving in Omalo, you’ll finish the journey where it all began, surrounded by towers, traditions, and stunning landscapes.

  • Elevation Gain: 1060 m

  • Max Elevation: 2284 m

  • Moving Time: ~8 hours

Day 5: Optional horse ride - Abano pass - Telavi - Tbilisi

After breakfast, enjoy a beginner-friendly horse ride around the village, taking in the peaceful scenery and local life at a relaxed pace. Later, we begin our journey back to Tbilisi, passing through the breathtaking Abano Pass and stopping in Telavi for a short break, before arriving in the capital.
